Söder Makes Progress: Bavaria to Sign Letter of Intent for Moon Control Center
Bavaria is taking a significant step towards its goal of establishing a control center for future moon missions. In an announcement made yesterday, Bayern’s Minister President Markus Söder, along with the European Space Agency (ESA) Director General Josef Aschbacher and the Chairwoman of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, revealed that a letter of intent for a moon control center will be signed next week.
Leading the Way in Space Exploration
The region of Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich is set to become home to the potential moon control center. Currently, Oberpfaffenhofen houses one of the control centers for the international space station ISS, making it a logical choice for the future moon control facility. The center is expected to play a crucial role in the preparation and execution of upcoming moon missions under NASA’s Artemis program.
“Das Mondkontrollzentrum wollen wir unbedingt haben.” – Markus Söder
Markus Söder expressed his enthusiasm for the moon control center, stating, “We absolutely want to have the moon control center.” With NASA’s Artemis program aiming to send humans back to the moon in the coming years, Bavaria’s commitment to space exploration is firmly established.
European Ambitions and Collaborations
In addition to the moon control center, the European Space Agency is hopeful that, with future missions, the moon could also be explored by a European astronaut for the first time. This collaboration between Bavaria, the ESA, and the DLR underscores Europe’s commitment to advancements in space exploration and research.
